Pop
This poster of Katy Perry’s ‘Prismatic’ world tour includes the main image is of Katy Perry in a stripped dress on top of a colourful background. Her pose and clothing suggests that she is targeting a younger audience (mainly females) and people who are into fashion. The colours on the poster are very bright and vivid which reflects the genre, which is happy. The typography is ‘funky’ and consistent with the album cover. On the bottom of the poster there are the tour dates and locations, there is also a website and ticket sales date.

Hip-Hop
This poster of Jay-Z ‘Magna Carta’ UK tour does not contain an image of the artist but instead it has the image from the album cover. This links to the album and helps to promote the album and concert more because people will recognise the image and relate it to the album so they will want to go to the concert. This is also a rather unique hip-hop poster because it doesn’t feature the artist so it doesn’t reflect the genre as well. Furthermore, the typography of the poste also follows the same style of the poster. At the bottom of the poster there are the tour dates and locations and also a website to purchase the tickets.

Alternative
This poster of the 'Sigh No More' tour by Mumford & Sons includes the band on a sofa as the main focus with a green wall in the background. They are wearing "country" styled clothing which suits their style of music and it is also consistent with their album covers. Their gestures and the way they are sat suggests that they are very calm and laid back which makes them more approachable to the audience. The typography on the poster follows the style of their albums and other work and it also reflects their genre again. At the top of the poster is the tour dates and locations and at the bottom of the poster is the ticket sales date and a website address to buy them from.

Rock
The Green Day poster features the band as the main focus on the poster and they have a black and white filter on them which illustrates that rock songs aren't always happy. On the other hand, the poster features bright greens and pinks. This makes the poster very eye-catching and it counteracts the black and white feature. The bands clothing is very common with their style of rock which consist of skinny jeans, t-shirts and sneekers. Furthermore, their stances and positioning are very aggressive and powerful which is usual of the genre and it is also how the act whilst on stage. Around the main image, the poster features a performance date, time and location which promotes the tour. It also features a website to buy tickets and also a look at the album which is soon to be released.

Preliminary cutting to the beat and shot analysis

P Money MY Lingo Planning

These are the lyrics to the song from around 40 seconds where the dialogue starts and for the prelim we will be doing 1 minute of the song so it will end around 1.40.

/ = change in shot

Real talk, that's my lingo
Real talk, that's my lingo/ Shot of P Money (P)
If you can't talk like this, bro/ Shot of squad (S)
Then I ain't really hearing shit, bro/ Different angle of P Money (P)
See, there's a lot of man out there with this knowledge
But they ain't educating like this, bro
But they'll tell 'em 'bout whips /Long take of P Money

and tricks, though Close up of stairs (C)
Nothing else going on, is that it,/ Close up of CCTV camera (C) bro?

Real talk, that's my lingo/ Close up of shop name (C)
Real talk, that's my lingo/

If you can't talk like this, bro/
Then I ain't really hearing shit, bro

See, there's a lot of man out there/ Shot of P Money (P) with this knowledge
But they ain't educating like this, bro
But they'll tell 'em 'bout whips and tricks,/ though
Nothing else going on, is that it,/ bro?

[Verse 1]
I was chatting to a yute, having a verbal spar/ Shot of squad (S)
He said P, I rate you, you've really gone far Shot of yute (Y)
I wanna/ go far too
This year, I'm going hard,/ Close up of youe's hand (C)I want a hundred large/
I said a hundred large? Shot of P Money (P) / What you splashing that on?
Man /said a car
Brudda, where's your drive?/ shot of squad (S)Brudda, where's your yard? Shot of P Money (P)
F that car/ Shot of P Money (P)
You're acting like you're a boss/ Close up of yute's jeans (C)
But you ain't in charge/
Wining, dining, all these girls you don't know
And you can't even dance/ Shot of yute (Y)
You're dumb, you spent your money in the/ brass
Brudda, where's your mum? Brudda, where's your aunt?
Wait, stop this deck
Brudda, where's your besties? Where's your dargs?
You find that interesting,/ Long Take of P Money (P) I find it depressing
Excuse my aggression,/ but you blame the oppression
Bro,/ that ain't oppression, you know what that is?/
You and your dickhead bredrins,/ gassed up on a next ting
None of you's real, your mind's based off a film/
Where you're just acting real, trust me/

This is a mid shot of P Money and his friends, they look threatening to other people which illustrates power.

This is a worms eye shot of the stairs going up a block of flats. this shows the area that they live in, they clearly live in an urban area that has flats.

This is a close up of some CCTV cameras which could imply that there is violence and crime in the area which suggests the status of the area and of P Money and his friends.

This is a low angle shot of a run down corner shop which has the windows boarded up. This implies that it has been smashed up and vandalised  which suggests that the area is rough and violent.

This Is a midshot of the road and of P money and his friend, they are walking down the road. This could mean that they are going somewhere to meet up or they are just hanging around near a building.

This is a close up of a yute ( slang word for a "youth"), he is standing talking to P money and his friends. He is talking about what he wants to do in life which is a common thing for young people to do.

Music Videos

Music videos comprised of two types of image:

Performance clips

Conceptual clips-narrative and artistic

Performance clips- video that shows the vocalists in one or more location.

Performance settings- the performance can take place in a different setting, perhaps with more variety. The singer could be in their bedroom, singing out the window; they could be walking down the street (common in rap music).

Narrative clip- a narrative clip contains a visual story that is easy to follow. A pure narrative clip contains no lip synchronised singing. A story is an idea, a concept, hence conceptual. The narrative usually relates to the song in some way.

Artistic clips- music videos use artistic elements to enhance the overall piece

Artistic performance video- A performance video that is heavily artistic.

Artistic narrative video- performance with a simultaneous narrative and artistic elements.

Genres-
  • Homage (an acknowledgment to something from the past)
  • Animation (use of drawings to illustrate lyrics and meanings)
  • Narrative (Sometimes there is an extended version of the music video in order to help develop characters or the plot. It tells a story throughout the video)
  • As live (Shows the song sung ‘as live’’ usually in a concert venue)
  • Referencing (Uses a media subject for inspiration)
  • Parody (It is created to Mock. It’s soul aim is to make fun of an original piece of work through either the subject matter, the author or the style)
  • Influence of commercials (Uses advertisements strategies to carry the narrative)
  • Pastiche (An imitation. The message promoted will usually be tongue in cheek)
  • Surreal (something that the audience would fine hard to believe is happening in the real world. Effects can be added to create a ‘dream like’ meaning)
  • Interpretive (It is a visual interpretation of the lyrics)
  • Impressionist (An artists take or ‘’impression’’ of a style/genre or theme)

Music video analysis

Illustration- The promo basically illustrates the ideas/narrative in the song lyrics.

This music video is an example of illustration as whatever happens in the lyrics happens in the video. when the lyrics "I wrote the addresses on 'em perfect" you can see him in the video then writing the address on the letter.

Amplification- Uses a key idea/image from the lyric and develops it into a concept within the promo. A link between the lyric and the promo.

This music video is an example of illustration as the lyrics slightly match the video. the song name is walk and when he says "And I'll be falling all the way down" in the video he keeps walking but goes downhill which links the promo and the lyrics together.

Disjuncture- The promo bears no resemblance to the lyric or its meaning; abstract; often seen as unconventional/’arty’ videos; creates a new range of meaning for the song.

This music video is an example of disjuncture as it bears no relevance to the lyrics at all, what happens in the video doesn't link with the lyrics at all. when he says "Can't stop, addicted to the shindig" it has no relevance to the video at all because they are all running around dancing at this point.

lesson 2: music promo

Lesson 2 music promo summer- focus: narrative/illustration/amplification/disjuncture

Camera work: shot types, movement, composition, framing, point of view.

Editing:

Mise en-scene: props, location, people, lighting.

BMW advert how is it like Music video:

Camera shot variety.

Editing goes with song.

Has a narrative.

Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, deme.

Linear narrative- straight line, straight story, chronological order

Non-linear narrative- random time not in order. Not in chronological order. Ellipsis, montage, flashback, flash forward.

Closed or open ended.

Closed- has a conclusion, can see clear ending.

Open- no real ending, own interpretation, cliff hanger.

Circular- story starts where it ends. How it starts is how it ends, characters feeling are the same.

Singular-stranded and multi-strand.

Singular- just one story line.

Multi- follows several different stories and story lines.

Todorovs theory of narrative

Equilibrium=first stage. Disruption= second stage recognition that disruption has to be restored= third stage. Repair damage that’s been done= fourth stage. New equilibrium= fifth stage.

Synaesthesia

“a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualisation of colour.”

Andrew Goodwin

Suggests music promos interpret meaning in the song lyric in different ways.

Illustration- the promo basically illustrates the ideas/narrative in the song lyrics.

Amplification- uses a key idea/image from the lyric and develops it into a concept within the promo. A link between the lyric and the promo.

Disjuncture- the promo bears no resemblance to the lyric or its meaning; abstract; often seen as unconventional/’arty’ videos; creates a new range of meaning for the song.

Eminem Stan- illustration.

Coldplay the scientist- non linear.
